Kenpachi earned his position through the most brutal path the Gotei 13 allows: killing the sitting captain in a duel in front of division witnesses. Coming from the most violent district of Rukongai, with no academy training, he did not even know the name of his zanpakuto, Nozarashi, which he only learns very late in Bleach. The title of "Kenpachi" is in fact passed on to the strongest swordsman of each generation.
