In short: Game Freak, the studio behind every mainline Pokémon game since 1996, announced a brand-new mobile title on September 14, 2026: Ame nochi Hare Onna. Magical girls turn Japan's real weather into magic, powered by live Weathernews data. Free-to-play, on iOS and Android, this winter, in Japan first.
What is Ame nochi Hare Onna?
A free-to-play mobile game developed by Game Freak with studio CHRONOGATE, set in present-day Japan, where magical girls called Hare-onna, the sunny girls, change the weather to lift people's spirits. The tagline sets the tone: « tomorrow's weather will become magic ».

The announcement key visual: laundry drying, cherry blossom petals, and two little creatures flying between the hangers. ©GAME FREAK inc.
The detail that made me read the announcement twice: Game Freak describes its project as a « laundry game ». That is not a translation joke. The key visual shows the heroine hanging out her washing, and the game's mascot vehicle is a mobile laundromat. Hanging clothes out when the sun shines, rushing them in when rain threatens: in Japan, where tumble dryers remain rare, it is a daily ritual, and the game turns it into a core mechanic.
The Hare-onna are joined by small heavenly messengers, the Kumorin, animal spirits who lend them their powers. And the announcement already teases an antagonist: a mysterious ame-onna, a rain girl. More on her below.
How does Japan's real weather drive the gameplay?
The game plugs into real-time forecasts from Weathernews Inc., gathered across all of Japan. Rain, blazing sun or snow in your area changes what happens on screen, and the studio promises a different experience every day. Weather is not a backdrop here, it is the game engine.
The partnership is anything but cosmetic: the September 14 announcement stream, titled « Hare Onna Club Meeting #1 », was broadcast from the Weathernews studio, and the company's logo sits on the game's visuals right next to Game Freak's. A weather forecasting firm lending its data to a magical girl game is a career move I did not see coming.
What the announcement does not say yet: what a play session actually looks like. No gameplay footage has been shown, and no genre beyond « laundry game ». Answers should come fast, since Game Freak is presenting the game at Tokyo Game Show, September 17 to 21, 2026 at Makuhari Messe, a record edition with 1,138 exhibitors according to the organizer.
Who are the Hare-onna and the Kumorin?
Six characters have been announced, in three duos: one Hare-onna and her Kumorin partner. Heroine Himawari Harewatari teams up with Pon Arai, a bright red tanuki with a chili-pepper tail. Add a fashion-obsessed fox, a globe-trotting mouse, and a rival who prefers the rain.

| Character | Role | Worth knowing | Voice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Himawari Harewatari | Hare-onna, heroine | Turns the weather into energy to cheer people up | Hiyori Kōno |
| Pon Arai | Tanuki Kumorin | Himawari's partner, chili-pepper shaped tail | Yuki Nagano |
| Yūri Amanohara | Hare-onna | Heir to a long line of Hare-onna, heads her school club, from Kyoto | Mirika Kawa |
| Kon Oribe | Kitsune Kumorin | White fox obsessed with fashion, stages shows at home | Ayaka Fujimoto |
| Izu Shinotsuki | Rain girl, rival | Mysterious ame-onna opposing Himawari, weather motif: rain | Chinatsu Hirose |
| Chuchu Yumekawa | Mouse Kumorin | Believes she is the cutest in the world and dreams of touring it | Momoka Tsuji |
Izu Shinotsuki's character sheet is my favourite of the batch. Where every Hare-onna displays her « weather motif », sun or hazy sky, hers simply reads « rain », and her bio fits in one line: a mysterious rain girl who stands against Himawari and her friends. Black twin-tails, a see-through umbrella, a washed-out palette: the perfect antagonist for a game where good weather is a superpower.

What does this have to do with Pokémon?
Nothing on the surface, everything behind the scenes. The project is directed and produced by Shigeru Ohmori, the man who led Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Sun and Moon, then Sword and Shield. And the design of the Machine Sentakkī laundry truck carries a signature everyone will recognize: Ken Sugimori, who drew the original 151 Pokémon.

This pink truck with a satellite dish and headlights for eyes has exactly the roundness of vintage Sugimori designs. The name puns on sentakuki, Japanese for washing machine. Thirty years after Charizard, the man is drawing a utility vehicle that does your laundry, and honestly, I love it.
In our shop, his original designs remain the most requested of the whole Pokémon shelf: the Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur 3D poster at 29.99 EUR holds a 5/5 across 35 reviews, and Grace, a Canadian customer, sums it up: « Amazing! It's very well made. Fast shipping and great quality! » (verified review, May 21, 2025). The new game's script goes to Katsunori Suginaka, and the Kumorin bestiary, tanuki, kitsune, mouse, draws from the same Japanese folklore as many early Pokémon.
When does the game release, and can you play it outside Japan?
Ame nochi Hare Onna launches this winter, no precise date yet, on iOS and Android, in Japan only for now. The game is free-to-play and pre-registration is already open on the Japanese App Store and Google Play. No Western release has been announced at this stage.
The technical constraint partly explains the caution: the game runs on Japan's regional weather forecasts. A Western version would mean plugging in another data source, not just translating menus. To follow the news closely, two channels: the X account @hareonna_info and Game Freak's YouTube channel, which hosts the announcement teaser and the September 14 livestream replay.

What happens when Game Freak steps away from Pokémon?
A richer tradition than most people think. The studio never stopped creating alongside its flagship licence: HarmoKnight on 3DS in 2013, Tembo the Badass Elephant in 2015, Giga Wrecker, Pocket Card Jockey, or Little Town Hero in 2019. Modest games, often endearing, rarely blockbusters.
The context changed scale this year. On August 4, 2026, Game Freak released Beast of Reincarnation, a dark action RPG set in post-apocalyptic Japan, its first game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, available day one on Game Pass. A month and a half later, the same studio announces magical girls hanging out laundry. That deliberate whiplash, between two Pokémon games as the licence celebrates its 30th anniversary with a worldwide release on September 16, 2026, says a lot about the freedom the studio is enjoying right now.
If that chapter of history interests you, our ranking of the Pokémon DS games looks back at the era when Game Freak was churning out dual-screen cartridges. And if Sugimori's round, huggable creatures are your thing, the 35 cm Snorlax plush at 24.99 EUR, 4.9/5 across 80 reviews, will hold the couch until winter, like the rest of our Pokémon shelf.
Frequently asked questions about Ame nochi Hare Onna
Will Ame nochi Hare Onna release in the West?
Nothing has been announced outside Japan so far. The winter 2026 launch only covers the Japanese app stores, and the game runs on Weathernews forecasts collected across Japan, which makes a simple translation trickier than usual. Game Freak has brought Pocket Card Jockey and Little Town Hero overseas after the fact though, so the door is not closed: the X account @hareonna_info will carry any update.
What does Ame nochi Hare Onna mean?
Literally « after the rain, the sunny girl ». It puns on « ame nochi hare », the stock phrase of Japanese weather reports meaning « rain, then clearing skies ». In Japanese folk belief, a hare-onna is someone who brings good weather wherever she goes; her counterpart, the ame-onna, attracts rain. Both sides exist in the game.
Is it a Pokémon game?
No. Ame nochi Hare Onna is an original IP with no Pokémon connection. The kinship lies elsewhere: Game Freak develops both, Shigeru Ohmori directed Pokémon Sun and Moon then Sword and Shield before leading this project, and Ken Sugimori, who drew the original 151 Pokémon, designed the Machine Sentakkī truck.
Who is developing the game with Game Freak?
CHRONOGATE Inc., a Japanese studio credited as co-developer on every visual. The weather data comes from Weathernews Inc., the forecasting company whose studio actually hosted the September 14, 2026 announcement livestream. Game Freak remains the lead developer and publisher.
Where can I watch the Ame nochi Hare Onna teaser?
On Game Freak's YouTube channel, which hosts the announcement teaser and the replay of the « Hare Onna Club Meeting #1 » livestream of September 14, 2026, broadcast from the Weathernews studio. No gameplay has been shown yet: Tokyo Game Show, September 17 to 21, should reveal more.
