In short: Devils' Crest, the anime adaptation of Demons' Crest by Sword Art Online author Reki Kawahara, premieres worldwide on Friday, November 6, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video. Production I.G animates, Ado sings the opening theme, and the cast was completed on September 16 with four classmates.
What is Devils' Crest about?
A survival anime by Reki Kawahara in which Actual Magic, the world's first full sensory immersion VRMMO-RPG, fuses with the real world and traps an entire class of eleven-year-olds in a game of life or death. Devils' Crest is the international title of the anime; the source novel is called Demons' Crest, four volumes at Dengeki Bunko since November 2022.

The key visual says it all: adventurer avatars above, the schoolkids they still are in the reflection. The Japanese tagline reads "this is a game, and this is reality". ©Reki Kawahara/Straight Edge/Demons' Crest Project
The hero, Yuma Ashihara, joins the playtest of Actual Magic, which starts in the novel on June 6, 2031. When it is time to log out, the game bleeds into reality: a classmate is turned into a monster, gargantuan beasts prowl the streets, and a demon named Valac possesses Sawa, Yuma's twin sister. Guided by that demon, Yuma and his friends fight to survive and to find their missing friend Nagi.
The anime's website owns the lineage with a one-line pitch: after the virtual reality of Sword Art Online and the augmented reality of the Ordinal Scale movie, Kawahara moves on to mixed reality. Twenty years after Aincrad, the author replays his trapped-game score, except this time logging out protects no one.
| Work | Technology | Format and year |
|---|---|---|
| Sword Art Online | VR, virtual reality | Novel 2009, anime 2012 |
| Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale | AR, augmented reality | Movie 2017 |
| Demons' Crest / Devils' Crest | MR, mixed reality | Novel 2022, anime on November 6, 2026 |
When does Devils' Crest come out, and where?
On Friday, November 6, 2026, on Prime Video, as a worldwide exclusive. No TV broadcast, no other platform: an Amazon subscription is all you need, wherever the service operates. The episode count and release cadence had not been announced as of September 16, 2026.

The project was announced on December 2, 2025, and the studio is no B-team: Production I.G, the house behind Ghost in the Shell and Haikyu!!. Shinji Ushiro supervises as chief director, Kenichirō Komaya directs, Eiji Umehara handles series composition, and Yukiko Horiguchi, the novels' illustrator, adapts her own characters. The music comes from Yūki Hayashi and Naoyuki Chikatani. Warner Bros. Japan produces and hosts the videos on its YouTube channel.

Who is in the Devils' Crest cast?
Eight roles are confirmed. The core four were announced between March and July 2026: Yuma, his twin Sawa, classmate Kenji and healer Minagi. On September 16, 2026, the anime's website completed the class with four more students, and the voice cast will raise eyebrows among seasoned anime watchers.

| Character | Who they are | Japanese voice | Announced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yuma Ashihara | The hero, 11, Actual Magic playtester | Haruka Shiraishi | March 2026 |
| Sawa Ashihara | His twin sister, possessed by the demon Valac | Konomi Inagaki | March 2026 |
| Kenji Kondō | Yuma's classmate | Yūya Hirose | July 2026 |
| Minagi Sano | The group's healer inside the game | Satomi Amano | July 2026 |
| Teruki Sugamo | Student council member, soccer club captain | Yūsuke Kobayashi | September 16, 2026 |
| Aria Misono | Top girl in the class hierarchy | Maaya Uchida | September 16, 2026 |
| Kai Kisanuki | Seemingly timid, keenly observant | Rie Murakawa | September 16, 2026 |
| Sumika Watamaki | The class idol among the boys | Sora Amamiya | September 16, 2026 |
Two details stand out in that announcement. First, the calibre of the voices: Yūsuke Kobayashi is Subaru in Re:Zero, Sora Amamiya was Aqua in Konosuba. Second, Sumika Watamaki's profile as the class idol: readers of volume 1 know her fate turns within the opening pages of the novel, and I will leave it at that.

Why is Ado's opening theme a big deal?
Because Ado does not lend her voice to just anything. The Devils' Crest opening is called "Shinka", literally "evolution", written by vocaloid producer Yurii Kanon, and performed by the singer of "New Genesis", Uta's song in One Piece Film Red. Warner Bros. Japan announced it as early as July, together with the release date.

Pairing Japan's most streamed masked singer with a direct-to-streaming launch sends a signal: Amazon and Warner are treating Devils' Crest as an end-of-year showcase, not as filler. If this opening is your first contact with Ado, you have a delightful catch-up session waiting on the One Piece side.
Can you read the Demons' Crest novel in English?
Yes, and that is a head start the anime-only crowd does not have. As of September 16, 2026, the series counts four volumes in Japan at Dengeki Bunko, from the first released on November 10, 2022 to the fourth on December 10, 2025. Yen Press has published the first three in English since June 2024, starting with "Reality Erosion" for volume 1. No French edition exists yet.
On the shop side, I will be straight with you: there is no Devils' Crest merchandise anywhere yet, the anime has not even aired. Kawahara's universe, though, is well represented. The Kirito and Asuna ring set from Sword Art Online at 12.99 EUR holds a 4.9/5 across 14 reviews; Daniella from the UK wrote "rings arrived early, and were in great condition" (verified review, June 12, 2025), adding that they run a bit big on small fingers, which matches what I see in returns. For the mother franchise, our article on the Sword Art Online Integral Domain movie planned for 2028 has the full picture.
And if you like getting in early on big premieres, keep an eye on Kagurabachi, the other heavyweight adaptation, April 2027 on Crunchyroll: between November 6 and spring, the anime calendar is packed. The rest of our manga jewelry and accessories is waiting in the same place.
Devils' Crest FAQ
Are Devils' Crest and Demons' Crest the same thing?
Yes. Demons' Crest is the title of Reki Kawahara's novel series at Dengeki Bunko, and Devils' Crest is the international title chosen for the anime. The change likely avoids confusion with Capcom's 1994 game Demon's Crest. Google mixes both spellings, but novel and anime tell the same story.
How many episodes will Devils' Crest have?
It has not been announced as of September 16, 2026. Prime Video has not said either whether episodes will drop weekly or all at once. The only certainty is the launch date, Friday, November 6, 2026, everywhere the platform is available.
Do I need to watch Sword Art Online first?
No. It is a standalone universe with no character shared with Sword Art Online or Accel World. The kinship is thematic: same author, same obsession with game worlds turning lethal, one technological step further, mixed reality instead of virtual reality.
Where can I read the Demons' Crest novel?
In Japanese at Dengeki Bunko, four volumes out. In English at Yen Press, which has published the first three volumes, starting with "Reality Erosion" in June 2024. There is no French edition as of September 16, 2026; a strong anime run would make one far more likely.
Will there be an English dub?
Prime Video has not detailed audio and subtitle languages yet. A global simultaneous launch makes broad subtitle coverage very likely, but no dub has been confirmed. The first PV exists in Japanese and in an English-subtitled version on the Warner Bros. Japan channel.
