Denji dies betrayed by a yakuza who sided with a devil, but Pochita, his chainsaw devil-dog, makes a pact with him: it replaces his heart to bring him back to life. Since then, Denji only has to pull the starter cord sticking out of his chest to turn into Chainsaw Man, with chainsaws bursting from his head and arms. That transformation opens the very first chapter of Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga.

Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil, a being feared by all devils because it can erase from existence anything it devours.
