It's a blue penguin the player can pick at the start of the adventure, alongside Turtwig and Chimchar. It evolves into Prinplup and then Empoleon, a Water and Steel Pokémon known for its pride. Piplup is also famous as Dawn's penguin companion in the animated series.

Piplup learns Water moves like Bubble and then Hydro Pump as it evolves. It also gains Drill Peck and Steel abilities once it becomes Empoleon. Its line is valued for solid special defense and an elegant look. In the anime, Dawn's Piplup often refuses to evolve, which made the character very endearing.
