Doflamingo's glasses: why he never takes them off, and how the replica holds up

Published on September 1, 2026·By Antoine Brault

A French cosplay and manga goods shop since 2023. We try on the costumes we sell, and we write about the series we actually follow. About us.

In short: Donquixote Doflamingo has never taken his glasses off himself since his first appearance in chapter 233 of One Piece, back in 2002, and Eiichiro Oda answered the question in 2017 with a joke: another pair appears underneath instantly. They broke only once, under Luffy's King Kong Gun. The replica sold here costs 19.99 euros and is rated 5 out of 5 by seven customers.

Why does Doflamingo never take off his glasses?

Nobody knows, and that is on purpose. Since chapter 233 of the manga, episode 151 of the anime, Donquixote Doflamingo has never shown his eyes, not as a child in the Dressrosa flashback, not as an adult, not in prison. Asked in the readers' questions of volume 85, Eiichiro Oda dodged with a drawing: "another glasses appear under the glasses instantly".

The SBS is the question-and-answer section printed in the collected volumes. The one in volume 85, picked up by the English-speaking press in September 2017, asked the question head-on: what would Doflamingo look like without his glasses? Oda's answer shows the character removing his pair, with a second pair growing underneath. In other words: keep guessing.

The most shared theory among readers comes from his childhood flashback in the Dressrosa arc: when the mob turns on his family, arrows are fired, and one panel suggests that one of them hits his left eye. Hence the idea that he hides a wound or a blind eye. Nothing confirms it, Oda has never validated it, and the SBS answer reads more like a way of saying the mystery is part of the character.

My view as a shop owner, and it is only mine: this is a drawing choice before it is a plot secret. An antagonist whose gaze you can never read is scary for free, and the grin underneath does the rest. Oda has the same reflex with Kuro at the start of the series, and his glasses also break at the moment of the knockout.

Have Doflamingo's glasses ever broken?

Only once, in chapter 790, when Luffy's King Kong Gun puts him down at the end of the Dressrosa arc, which matches episode 733 of the anime. The lenses crack under the blow, the broken frame bounces away from his body in chapter 791, and we still do not see his eyes. He wears an intact pair as soon as we find him in his cell.

It is the only moment in the whole series when the frame leaves his face, and he is unconscious. The detail matters for a cosplay: if you play the Doflamingo of the end of Dressrosa, you need cracked glasses, not no glasses. The rest of the time they do not move, not even in the rain of the final scene, not even during the Birdcage.

What exactly do Doflamingo's glasses look like?

A thin white frame, stretched far towards the temples, with upturned cat-eye tips, and coloured lenses that change with the medium: orange on the manga's colour pages, purple in the anime before the time skip, red since his return at Sabaody and throughout the Dressrosa arc. The Bandai cards and the Pirate Warriors 4 game kept the red.

The detail replicas miss most often is the stretch. Doflamingo's glasses are much wider than they are tall, with a tip that rises at the outer corner and a second, smaller tip at the inner corner. A classic cat-eye frame only has the first. In Oda's drawing, the whole thing gives a bird-of-prey stare; on a replica that is too round, you get beach sunglasses.

The replica: what the seven reviews say

5 out of 5, seven reviews including four with photos, from seven different countries (Spain, United States, France, Mexico, Serbia, Poland, Argentina), left between March and August 2025. What customers point out: the likeness to the drawing, the sturdiness, and a cleaning cloth in the box.

The comments are short, as they often are for a 19.99 euro accessory, but they say precise things. Pamela, in the United States, in June 2025: "I love the glasses. Looks just like what they are supposed to look like." Miguel, in Mexico, in August 2025: "It arrived really well packed, it looks sturdy, and it even comes with its little cloth to clean it." Dusan, in Serbia, the same month: "Good quality, didn't expect it to be that good and to arrive early." The other three reviews with text fit in one line: as described, as pictured.

Two honest limits. Seven reviews is not many, the listing only has eighteen months of feedback. And the lenses are mirror-tinted: great in photos and under convention lighting, less practical for reading a programme in a dark hall. These are not prescription glasses: the lenses are flat, non-corrective, and the frame is not designed to take optician lenses. If you wear glasses daily, it is contact lenses or nothing, as with every accessory of this kind.

The full Doflamingo cosplay, piece by piece

Four elements make the character: the glasses, the pink feather coat, the open shirt and the short spiky blond hair. The glasses are the only piece we sell as is. The coat is made with feather boas sewn onto a long light coat, the rest comes from your wardrobe or a thrift shop.

PieceWhat you needWhere to get it

Feather coatFlamingo pink, ankle length, very bulky collarHomemade: pink feather boas sewn onto a long, light coat, with extra volume on the shoulders
ShirtWhite, open on the chest, thin stripes depending on the versionWardrobe or thrift shop
TrousersPatterned capri, red or orange depending on the mediumThrift shop; our Doflamingo shorts at 24.99 euros (4.6/5 from 18 reviews) are a wink, not a cosplay piece
HairBlond, short, spikedShort blond wig to style, not in our catalogue
EarringsSmall, gold, one per earCostume jewellery

The coat is the item that takes time, not money. Count several boas to get the volume of the collar, and the lightest base coat you can find, because feathers get heavy fast. Doflamingo is 3.05 metres tall in the manga: no point trying, it is the hunched posture, the spread arms and the grin that make the character in a photo.

Wearing them without the full cosplay

Yes, and judging by the photos customers leave, that is even the main use: a white cat-eye frame with mirror lenses passes for festival sunglasses. People who know One Piece get it in a second, everyone else sees slightly daring shades.

It is the same logic as Zoro's earrings or Kamina's glasses: a single accessory is enough to sign the character at an anime screening, a party or a convention, without a three-kilo coat. In summer, with the Doflamingo shorts, the pair makes a half-cosplay you can actually wear. For more ideas in that spirit, our selection of ten easy cosplays for beginners is built for that.

A photo tip: mirror lenses catch the light. Face a light source, a screen or a window, and the glasses light up like in the anime. In the shade, they look black. On timing, the shop's rule: 7 to 21 days of delivery depending on destination, returns accepted within 14 days, and a month of margin before a convention. The glasses travel well in their case, keep it for the convention bag.

Where is Doflamingo now in One Piece?

In prison. Defeated in Dressrosa, he has been locked up on level 6 of Impel Down since the end of the arc, and has not come out. He reappears in touches in recent chapters, and escape theories come back with every new arc. The Dressrosa arc covers chapters 700 to 801 of the manga and episodes 629 to 746 of the anime.

To rewatch it, the full arc is on Crunchyroll, and Netflix added episodes 629 to 746 in February 2025, as Toei Animation announced on its social channels. His Japanese voice is Hideyuki Tanaka; in French, it is Éric Missoffe, the voice of Scooby-Doo, who gave him that laugh. If you are picking the series back up midway, our page on streaming platforms and the broadcast calendar has the details.

His 340 million berry bounty stayed frozen during his years as a Warlord, which says a lot about what the World Government knew and tolerated. On the video game side, he is playable in One Piece Pirate Warriors 4, released in 2020 and re-released on PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 on 21 November 2025. And on the shop side, the One Piece section has thirty products, two of them in his name: the glasses and the shorts.

Frequently asked questions about Doflamingo's glasses

Why does Doflamingo wear glasses?
It is not explained in the manga. Eiichiro Oda answered in the volume 85 SBS that another pair appears underneath instantly, which is a way of keeping the mystery. The most widespread theory, a wound to the left eye received in childhood, has never been confirmed.

Has Doflamingo ever taken off his glasses?
Never by himself. They broke a single time, in chapter 790 (episode 733), under Luffy's King Kong Gun, and the frame flies off in chapter 791 while he is unconscious. His eyes stay out of frame, and he wears glasses again in prison.

What colour are Doflamingo's lenses?
Orange on the manga's colour pages, purple in the anime before the time skip, red in the anime since Sabaody, including all of Dressrosa. The frame is always white and thin. The shop's replica has red-orange mirror lenses.

Can you fit prescription lenses in the Doflamingo glasses?
No. The lenses are flat and non-corrective, and the narrow frame is not built to take optician lenses. For a cosplay with eyesight to correct, contact lenses remain the answer, as for every character's glasses.

Do the Doflamingo glasses stay on over a wig?
Yes, the arms are straight and go over a short wig styled into spikes. In the review photos, customers wear them on their own hair and on wigs alike, without any adjustment. For a long day, keep the case within reach rather than pushing them up on your forehead, the frame is thin.

How long does delivery take?
7 to 21 days depending on destination, with tracking. A Serbian customer notes they arrived early, but keep a month of margin before a convention. Returns are accepted within 14 days if the frame does not suit you.
